April 27 — The Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) have signed forward Gabe Levin for the 2026 season, bringing in a player with valuable NBA G League experience with the Stockton Kings (Sacramento Kings affiliate) and a proven ability to contribute in competitive, high-level environments.

Levin brings a well-rounded skillset and professional experience to Calgary, as the Surge continue to build a competitive and balanced lineup heading into the new campaign.

“Gabe is a player we’re really excited about adding to our group,” said General Manager Shane James. “His ability to rebound, facilitate, and compete physically gives us another dimension on both ends of the floor.”

Standing 6-foot-8, Levin is known for his toughness, rebounding ability, and offensive versatility. He can score around the basket, make plays for teammates, and defend multiple positions, making him a valuable addition to Calgary’s frontcourt.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to join the Calgary Surge and compete in the CEBL,” said Levin. “I’ve heard great things about the organization and the city, and I’m looking forward to getting to work with the team, building chemistry, and doing whatever it takes to help us win.”

Levin joins the Surge following his 2025–26 season with the Stockton Kings, where he averaged 8.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. His strong presence on the glass and ability to impact the game as a playmaker highlight his value as a consistent and reliable contributor.

He also played a role in Stockton’s playoff success, contributing in key moments during the team’s run to the NBA G League Finals, including a late putback finish in the Western Conference Finals to help secure the win.

Levin originally signed with the Stockton Kings in 2024 after gaining professional experience overseas in the Israeli Basketball Premier League and with the South Bay Lakers (Los Angeles Lakers affiliate), continuing to develop into a dependable frontcourt presence.

Levin began his collegiate career at Loyola Marymount University, where he made an immediate impact as a true freshman, starting all 29 games, while leading the team in rebounding and ranking third in scoring. His performance earned him West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team honours. He later continued his college career at Long Beach State University, where he emerged as one of the top players in the Big West Conference. In his senior season, Levinscored in double figures in 23 consecutive games, averaging 18.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, while ranking among the conference leaders in both categories.

With Levin’s addition, the Surge continue to strengthen their roster with experienced and versatile talent as they prepare for the 2026 CEBL season.

(REAL) announced today that its Calgary Surge property of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) will host three marquee games during the 2026 season, with stops in Lethbridge, Red Deer, and a highly anticipated return to the Scotiabank Saddledome during the Calgary Stampede. Following the success of their first neutral-site event in Red Deer, the team

Next up, the Surge will play a marquee game in Lethbridge on Saturday, June 20 at 5:00 p.m. , introducing professional basketball to southern Alberta. The Surge will take on the Montreal Alliance in this historic SURGE 2 LETHBRIDGE matchup, marking the team’s first-ever appearance in the city. The event will feature the same high-energy game presentation, entertainment, and community engagement that have defined the Surge experience.

The Calgary Surge and the Vancouver Bandits had the two best regular season records in the CEBL during the 2025 season and were opponents in the Western Conference Semifinal that saw the Surge victorious and qualify for their third straight Championship Weekend appearance.

April 21 — The Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced today that guard Brandon Muntu has signed with the team for the 2026 season, marking his first professional campaign in the league.

Muntu brings versatility, energy, and a strong two-way presence to the Surge roster as Calgary continues to build a competitive lineup heading into the new season.

“Brandon is an exciting addition for us,” said General Manager Shane James. “He’s a high- motor player who competes on both ends of the floor and brings a level of toughness and athleticism that fits our identity.”

A 6’4” guard, Muntu is known for his length, defensive instincts, and ability to contribute to multiple areas of the game. His rebounding, transition play, and physical style give Calgary added depth and flexibility on the wing and in the frontcourt.

“I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to join the Calgary Surge. Being from Calgary, this means a lot to me, and I’m excited to represent my city,” said Muntu. “I’m looking forward to competing, growing with the team, and giving the fans something to be proud of this season.”

Muntu joins the Surge following his collegiate career at Tennesse Tech University, where he competed at a high level in NCAA Division I basketball. During the 2025–26 season, he averaged 9.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game, while shooting 41.8 percent from the field. His production reflected his ability to contribute offensively while maintaining a strong defensive presence and high level of effort.

Throughout his college career, Muntu developed a reputation as a reliable and disciplined player, capable of guarding multiple positions and contributing within a team-first system. His experience in a competitive program has prepared him well for the transition to the professional ranks.

Prior to Tennesse Tech, Muntu played two seasons at Western Michigan, including a 2024–25 campaign where he appeared in all 32 games and averaged 5.7 points, while earning multiple academic honors. He previously starred at Triton College, earning NJCAA Third Team All- American honors in 2022–23, and began his collegiate career at Vincennes University. A Canadian native, he developed at Dohn Prep Academy and has participated in Canadian National Team training camps at the U16, U18, and U23 levels.

JAVONTÉ BROWN RETURNS TO BOOST SURGE IN 2026 SEASON

April 17 — The Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced today that centre Javonté Brown will return to the team for the 2026 season after making his professional debut in 2025.

Brown, a key presence in the paint, brings size, physicality, and veteran leadership back to the Surge lineup. His return strengthens Calgary’s frontcourt as the team builds toward another competitive CEBL campaign.

“Javonté is an important piece of what we’re building here in Calgary,” said General Manager Shane James. “His presence and growing professional experience make a significant impact for us on and off the court. We’re excited to have him back with the Surge for 2026.”

Brown, a 7’0”, 240-pound native of Toronto, ON, is a mobile big man known for his shot-blocking, rebounding, and soft touch around the rim. His length and agility make him a valuable interior contributor on both ends of the floor.

In the 2025 CEBL season, Brown averaged 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. The Surge also posted a 75 percent win rate in games he started, highlighting his impact and importance within the lineup.

“Feels great to be back with the Surge. I’ve got a lot of love for Calgary and what we’re building here,” said Brown “I’m locked in on coming back better, competing every night, and doing whatever it takes to win a Championship. Can’t wait to get in front of the fans again.”

During the offseason, Brown continued his professional career overseas with Grupo Ureta Tizona Burgos in Spain. He averaged 6.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per game, showcasing his defensive presence and ability to compete against high-level international talent. Brown played for the University of Rhode Island during the 2024–25 NCAA season, where he started all 31 games. He averaged 8.1 points and 5.8 rebounds in just over 20 minutes per game while shooting 65 percent from the field. He recorded a season-high 21 points and 10 rebounds against Temple and added multiple blocks in key conference matchups.

Prior to Rhode Island, Brown gained NCAA Division I experience at Western Michigan (2022–23), Texas A&M (2021–22), and UConn (2020–21). At Texas A&M, he made 11 starts and helped the program reach the NIT Championship Game. Across his collegiate career, he developed under elite coaching staff while competing in both Power Five and mid-major conferences.

CALGARY SURGE STRENGTHEN 2026 BENCH WITH CHAMPIONSHIP-LEVEL EXPERIENCE

April 15 — The Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced today their coaching staff for the 2026 season, adding a blend of professional, university, and international experience to the organization’s bench.

Joining the Surge and Head Coach Perry Huang for the 2026 campaign are Sidney Dobner, David DeAveiro, and returning assistant coach Kenny Otieno.

Otieno returns to the Surge after a strong 2025 season with the club. A former standout at the University of Alberta, he helped lead the Golden Bears to a Canada West Championship and U SPORTS national bronze medal. He most recently played for the Edmonton Stingers at the professional level. Following his playing career, Otieno transitioned into coaching with both the Edmonton Stingers and University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, where he eventually became the program’s head coach in 2023. He brings a strong foundation in player development, scouting, and defensive structure.

“I’m looking forward to my second year with the Surge! Last year was special even though we fell short of our championship goal,” said Otieno. “I’m excited to run it back this season with a reloaded team and a great staff. We appreciate the continued support of our fans and look forward to seeing them this summer!”

Dobner joins the Surge after coaching in the NBA and NBA G League system, most recently with the Stockton Kings. She previously worked within the Milwaukee Bucks organization, advancing from player development and video roles with the Wisconsin Herd before becoming the first female assistant coach in Milwaukee Bucks history in 2023. Dobner served in a developmental role during the franchise’s 2021 NBA Championship-winning season. Dobner has also worked in NBA Summer League and pre-draft environments, specializing in film breakdown, scouting, and player development.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to join the Calgary Surge and be part of a group that’s hungry to compete,” said Dobner. “It’s special to be back in Canada, and I’m looking forward to bringing energy, attention to detail, and a winning mindset as we build something special this season.”

DeAveiro brings over two decades of coaching experience across U SPORTS, Canada Basketball, and the CEBL. He is currently the head coach of the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold, and previously led both the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees and McGill University, combining for over 400 career wins, multiple conference championships, and eight U SPORTS Final 8 appearances. At McGill, he captured five RSEQ titles and while at the University of Ottawa he set the program’s all-time wins record. Internationally, DeAveiro has coached with Canada Basketball at multiple FIBA events. He has also held multiple coaching roles in the CEBL with the Ottawa BlackJacks. In 2025, he reached his 500th U SPORTS career win, ranking among the winningest coaches in Canadian university basketball history.

April 13 — The Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced today that guard Evan Gilyard II has re-signed with the team for the upcoming season.

Gilyard II returns to Calgary after an electrifying 2025 campaign where he established himself as one of the league’s most dynamic backcourt players. In 16 games with the Surge, the Chicago native averaged over 20 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game, while shooting efficiently from the field and beyond the arc. His ability to control the tempo, create offense, and deliver in key moments made him a cornerstone of Calgary’s success.

The 5’10” guard also delivered under bright lights, including a standout performance at the Scotiabank Saddledome during SURGE 2 STAMPEDE, where he set a franchise regular season scoring record with 37 points to propel the Surge to victory.

Since the conclusion of the CEBL season, Gilyard II has continued to elevate his professional résumé, most recently winning the NBA G League Championship this past weekend with the Greensboro Swarm, adding a major accomplishment that underscores his ability to perform and win at a high level.

Prior to his professional career, Gilyard II attended Simeon Career Academy in Chicago, Illinois, before embarking on an impressive collegiate journey. He competed at the University of Texas at El Paso, New Mexico State, and the University of Missouri–Kansas City in the NCAA, where he earned First-Team All-Summit League honours.

After going undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft, Gilyard II turned pro and has built a well-traveled resume. Most recently he played in the NBA G League with the Greensboro Swarm (Charlotte Hornets affiliate), Memphis Hustle (Memphis Grizzlies affiliate), and Raptors 905 (Toronto Raptors affiliate). In a March 2025 game for the Raptors 905 he erupted for a career-high 34 points in a win over the Windy City Bulls.

Gilyard II has also been named as a recipient of the NBA G League Community Assist Award (2024-25), recognizing his significant impact and dedication to community service.

CALGARY SURGE CONTINUE CANADIAN PIPELINE WITH SIGNING OF CAELUM SWANTON-RODGER

April 9 — The Calgary Surge announced today the signing of Calgary native Caelum Swanton-Rodger, bringing a hometown presence, size, defensive strength, and high-level collegiate experience to the club’s roster ahead of the upcoming season.

Swanton-Rodger joins the Surge following a breakout 2024–25 campaign with the Monarchs, where he established himself as one of the premier defensive players in the Sun Belt Conference. The 6-foot-8 forward started 33 of 34 games and ranked second on his team in rebounding with 167 total boards (4.9 per game). He also finished second in the conference in both total blocks (61) and blocks per game (1.79), showcasing his elite rim protection.

“Caelum is an impactful two-way player who really anchored things defensively at the collegiate level,” said Shane James, General Manager. “He competes at a high level, protects the rim, and rebounds the ball effectively. We’re thrilled to welcome him back to Canada and into the Surge family.”

In addition to his defensive impact, Swanton-Rodger contributed offensively with 187 points (5.5 per game), 37 assists, and 11 steals while shooting an efficient 56.9 percent from the field. He recorded six double-digit scoring performances, highlighted by an 18-point, 10-rebound effort against Louisiana in the Sun Belt Championship. He also posted a career-best seven blocks in a dominant performance versus Texas State.

“As a kid from Calgary it has always been a dream of mine to be able to play the game I love with my friends and family there to support me. During his prep career, he averaged 21.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks per game, demonstrating his all-around impact on both ends of the floor.

April 8 — The Calgary Surge announced today the selection of Marjok “MJ” Okado and Joshua Francis as the club’s U SPORTS draft picks in the 2026 CEBL Signing Day.

Okado returns to his hometown of Calgary after a decorated university career with the Carleton Ravens. A product of the Edge School for Athletes, Okado continued to develop into one of the premier guards in Canadian university basketball. In 2026, he earned OUA Third Team All-Star honours, while leading his team in scoring. Earlier in his career, he was named to the OUA All- Rookie Team in 2023, showcasing exceptional efficiency from beyond the arc. Okado capped

off his time at Carleton by being named the program’s Outstanding Graduating Male Athlete of the Year and became one of only 15 players in school history to surpass 1,000 career points, reaching the milestone in February 2026.

“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to join the Calgary Surge and represent my hometown. Growing up in Calgary, it’s always been a dream to play professionally here in front of family, friends, and the community that supported me along the way,” said Okado.

Francis, also a Calgary product and fellow Edge School alumnus, brings size and efficiency to the Surge frontcourt. After continuing his development at Fort Erie International Academy, Francis moved on to the Memorial Sea-Hawks, where he quickly made an impact and earned AUS All-Rookie Team honours. Known for his presence in the paint, Francis shot an impressive 51.6% from the field, establishing himself as a reliable and efficient interior player. Following the season, he transferred to the University of Lethbridge where he played under Surge Assistant Coach, Kenny Otieno, who also serves as the program’s Head Coach.

“It means a lot to be coming back and joining the Calgary Surge. I’ve worked hard to develop my game over the past few years, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to take this next step,” said Francis.

April 7 — The Calgary Surge are excited to announce the return of fan favourite and three-time CEBL All-Canadian Sean “Rugzy” Miller-Moore for his fourth season with the team.

Miller-Moore continues to establish himself as one of Canada’s premier basketball talents, bringing elite athleticism, scoring ability, and veteran experience back to the Surge lineup. His return follows an impressive international season with ALM Évreux in France, where he averaged 17.4 points per game during the 2025–26 season, further solidifying his reputation as one of the most dynamic Canadian professionals competing abroad.

“Rugzy has been a key part of our team since day one,” said Shane James, General Manager of the Calgary Surge. “His energy, passion, and love for the game light up the court, and his connection with our fans is something special. We couldn’t be more excited to have him back for another season.”

A native of Brampton, Ontario, Miller-Moore first made his mark at Thornlea Secondary School before continuing his development at Moberly Area Community College, Oregon State University, and Grand Canyon University. During the 2025 CEBL season, Miller-Moore delivered another standout season for Calgary, averaging 18.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists across 24 regular season and playoff games, helping lead the Surge to their third straight Championship Weekend appearance (2023–2025), and establishing himself as one of the faces of the franchise.

MARCH 10 - The Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that Perry Huang, current Assistant Coach of the Los Angeles Lakers’ NBA G League affiliate South Bay Lakers, has been named the club’s Head Coach for the 2026 season.

Huang arrives at the Calgary Surge after a distinguished run developing players and coaching across the world’s top men’s and women’s professional leagues, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Huang began his coaching career in 2014 as a Coaching Associate with the Santa Cruz Warriors.

“We are excited to welcome Perry to Calgary,” said Dylan Howe, Team President of the Calgary Surge. “Perry’s background in player development, his experience in high-performance environments, and his championship pedigree make him the right leader at the right time for us. He has the entire organization’s full confidence.”

Upon learning that 2025 Surge Head Coach Kaleb Canales’ current role with Troy University would preclude him from returning, the Surge’s Basketball Operations Leadership Team selected Huang after a competitive interview process. The group consists of Team President, Dylan Howe, General Manager, Shane James, and Senior Advisor, Steve Konchalksi.

Notable accomplishments in Huang’s professional coaching career include:

● NBA G League Champion (2015) as an Assistant Coach with the Santa Cruz Warriors.

● Two-time WNBA Champion (2018, 2020) as a Video Coordinator and Assistant Coach with the Seattle Storm.'

Huang is a graduate of Fresno Pacific University, where he played collegiately before beginning his coaching journey. After his tenure with the Santa Cruz Warriors, from 2018 through 2024, Huang worked year-round between the NBA G League and WNBA. During the traditional basketball season, he coached within NBA G League systems, including time with the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans organizations, while spending each WNBA season on staff with the Seattle Storm.

During his time in Seattle, Huang played an instrumental role in developing several of the most accomplished players in WNBA history, including:

● Jewell Loyd – Six-time WNBA All-Star and Olympic gold medalist

In 2024, Huang joined the South Bay Lakers coaching staff and with the approval of South Bay’s Head Coach and General Manager and Los Angeles Lakers Head Coach, JJ Reddick, Huang served as Interim Head Coach for three games (2-1 record). Huang has worked with several CEBL stars in Los Angeles including 2023 Surge player Kylor Kelley. He has also coached multiple players who have earned NBA opportunities through the G League development system, including Jordan Goodwin, Cole Swider, Kobe Bufkin, and Drew Timme.

FEB 4 – The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) unveiled its reinvigorated Saskatchewan franchise at a press conference Wednesday at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon. The rebranded, Saskatoon Mamba (previously Saskatchewan Rattlers) will return for their eighth season in May, with both SaskTel Centre and Merlis Belsher Place hosting games. Jason Ribeiro and Usman Tahir Jutt were introduced as the team’s ownership group. The business and community leaders also operate the CEBL’s Calgary Surge.

The Saskatchewan Rattlers were the inaugural champions of Canada’s professional basketball league in 2019. The reinvigorated Saskatoon Mamba brand was designed by REAL Studios , a creative agency founded by Ribeiro that creates accessible culture-driven content and materials that move audiences.

Mamba maintains the franchise’s identity as a venomous snake with a modern look, feel, and sound, and is a deliberate acknowledgement of the franchise’s origins as the “Rattlers.” The icon and typeface reflect the same curvature and bend present in the City of Saskatoon’s logo, a nod to the city’s place along the South Saskatchewan River. The team’s primary colour is a bold and vibrant purple, with more colourways to be revealed soon.

The 2026 season will see the team play at both SaskTel Centre, the team’s home for the last 7 years, and Merlis Belsher Place. In total, 7 regular season games will be played at Merlis Belsher Place, and 5 regular season games will be played at SaskTel Centre.

Merlis Belsher Place is a 120,000 square-foot multisport and live events facility on the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon operated by Nustadia Recreation Inc. Opened in 2018, it provides an arena with a centre-hung video board, capacity for 2,750 spectators, and houses the two official NBA-size Ron and Jane Graham Gymnasiums. Merlis Belsher Place was named in honour of USask alumnus Merlis Belsher. The facility has hosted the prestigious Grand Slam of Curling, Canadian National Ball Hockey Championships, Saskatchewan Roughriders Winter Classic, Saskatoon Folk Fest, and many other events. Merlis Belsher Place is also a year-round community sport and recreation hub for thousands of Saskatoon children and newcomers.

The Canadian Elite Basketball League’s (CEBL) eighth season marks the beginning of a new era for the league with the introduction of a full in-market playoff model and the first best-of-three CEBL Finals series in league history.

The Calgary Surge regular season will feature 24 games — 12 at home and 12 on the road — running from May 9 to August 3. Following the regular season, the playoffs will begin with a single-elimination Conference Semifinals on Thursday, August 6, followed by single-elimination Conference Finals on Saturday, August 8, with higher seeds hosting each round.

The season will conclude with a best-of-three CEBL Finals from August 12–16, marking the first multi-game championship series in league history, with the lower seed hosting Game 1 and the higher seed hosting Games 2 and 3, if necessary. DEC 15 – The Calgary Surge Professional Basketball Club is proud to announce that Dylan Howe has been promoted to Team President as part of an organized succession plan. Howe previously served as the team’s Senior Vice President, where he was instrumental in driving the Surge’s operations in basketball, ticketing, community engagement, and programming.

Howe has served under the direct mentorship of Surge Co-Chairman and awarded entrepreneur Jason Ribeiro since the franchise launched in October 2022. Prior to joining the Calgary Surge, Howe served in progressively senior roles with the Niagara River Lions (2016-18) and Guelph Nighthawks (2018-2022) of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).

CALGARY SURGE NAMED 2025 CEBL FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR AND DIGITAL EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER

The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), Canada's largest domestic professional sports league, announced Thursday the Calgary Surge have been named the 2025 CEBL Franchise of the Year as part of the league's 2025 Business Awards. The Surge also took home the Digital Excellence Award, marking the second time in three years Calgary has

received that distinction.

“The Calgary Surge have proven themselves best-in-class, excelling on the court, engaging fans, and making a real impact in their community. These awards are a well-deserved recognition of their outstanding achievements,” said CEBL President Ty Mazereeuw. Over three years the Surge have become Calgary's winningest team, outpacing the winning percentage of all local NHL, CFL, AHL, WHL, NLL, CPL, and NSL franchises.

In 2025, the Surge captured their second Western Conference Championship in three years, advanced to a third consecutive Championship Weekend, and finished with a 17–7 record, the second-best mark in the league and best in franchise history. Calgary also led the CEBL in rebounds, steals, fouls drawn, and free throw attempts, while allowing the fewest points against.

The team’s success was fueled by a star-studded roster assembled by General Manager, Shane James and led by Head Coach, Kaleb Canales. Jameer Nelson Jr. set a CEBL record with 57 steals and was named Defensive Player of the Year (nominated alongside Surge forward Greg Brown III), while Evan Gilyard II established a new franchise scoring record with

37 points in a single game and a CEBL playoff record with eight three-pointers. Rugzy Miller- Moore finished tied for first in target-score game winners (six) and set a new single-season scoring record for a Canadian with 427 points.

The Surge continue to hold the largest single-game attendance record in the CEBL and in 2025 the Surge hosted their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th highest-attended games and their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th highest-grossing games in franchise history. The Surge also became the first CEBL team to host regular season games in three venues in a single season – WinSport Event Centre, the

Scotiabank Saddledome (headlining the Calgary Stampede), and Marchant Crane Centrium in Red Deer (the first neutral-site game in league history).

The team’s commitment to community remains at the core of its identity. This year saw the launch of their free SURGE CITY HOOPS programming in collaboration with the City of Calgary. Their Surge ASSIST program with Kids Up Front Calgary provided free access to games for another 2,250 vulnerable Calgarians in 2025, raising nearly $400,000 over three

years and supporting more than 6,500 children and families. The team has also raised nearly $50,000 for KidSport to help remove financial barriers to youth basketball programming across the city.

The criteria for each award is as follows:

FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR

Awarded to the franchise that best represents the values of the CEBL through good internal governance, engagement in the community, commitment to innovation, success on the basketball court and with revenue generation, demonstration of a long-term vision for sustainable business growth, and promotion of Canadian basketball.

DIGITAL EXCELLENCE AWARD

Awarded to the franchise that best delivers graphic and video content that demonstrates excellence in quality of presentation and appeal, creativity and innovation, and overall consistency, while driving interactive engagement with designated targeted audiences that show a measurable impact for followers, partners, and for the franchise’s business and brand awareness. Voted 40% by quantifiable measures in-season from May 1 to August 31 and 60% by vote.

Award winners were voted on by different variations of groups comprised of league and team executives, including but not limited to the CEBL’s President and Chief Operating Officer, and all 10 team presidents.

BANDITS HOST SURGE IN WEST SEMIFINAL: TRIP TO CW25 AT STAKE

As the Calgary Surge and Vancouver Bandits jockeyed for position atop the Western Conference all season, a postseason matchup appeared all but destined.

Now, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the West get ready to face off at Langley Events Centre on Saturday, with a trip to the Western Conference Final at Championship Weekend — and a matchup against the host Winnipeg Sea Bears — on the line.

The Surge and Bandits enter the matchup as the two hottest teams in the league, each having won their last four regular-season games. Meanwhile, Calgary pushed its win streak to five straight with a 103-95 Play-In win over the Edmonton Stingers on Thursday to advance to the Western Conference Semifinal.

It was an effort led by the floor general tandem of Evan Gilyard II (28 points, five assists) and Jameer Nelson Jr. (26 points, seven assists and two steals). The duo not only accounted for over 50 per cent of the Surge’s scoring production on the night, but also led the way in Target Score Time as Gilyard II and Nelson Jr. scored all of Calgary’s points once the clocks stopped.

“It’s super special and we’re super spoiled having both of them,” Surge head coach Caleb Canales said of the pairing after the game. “Both are knocking on the door of an NBA contract. They play both ends at a high level, so we’ve been very spoiled by both of them.”

On the other side, the Bandits look to begin their postseason journey of retribution on the right foot. Vancouver made it to the Championship Final last year before ultimately losing to the Niagara River Lions.

And it was clear that the West Coast squad had nothing but redemption on its mind leading into 2025, as this year’s Bandits have been on a mission, maintaining pole position in the conference for much of the season. An effort that stemmed largely from their dominance on both ends of the floor — boasting the league’s No. 1 offence (98.8 points per game) and second-ranked defence (88.4 points against per game).

Saturday’s matchup also won’t be the first time the West rivals meet in the playoffs, as Vancouver and Calgary are plenty familiar with one another in a single-elimination setting. The pair have faced off in the Western Conference Final in back-to-back seasons leading into this year, and fittingly, those battles were split evenly — the Surge winning in 2023 (then losing to the Scarborough Shooting Stars in the Final) and the Bandits coming out on top in 2024.

Season series

If there’s any squad that won’t be intimidated at the prospect of heading into Vancouver to take on a top-seeded Bandits team, it’s the Surge.

For starters, Calgary hasn’t been far behind in terms of two-way production as it ranks second on offence (95.3) and first on defence (87.2). Beyond that, the Surge also hold a bit of a mental edge, considering they swept the regular-season series (3-0) against the Bandits this year.

Aside from the last game, which came down to a Gilyard game-winning triple, the first two contests were fairly one-sided as Calgary won them by an average margin of 16.0 points.

Victories that were spearheaded by the Surge’s trademark defence as they held the top-scoring and most efficient offence in the CEBL to just 87 points per game on 43 per cent shooting throughout the three games.

Players to watch

Saturday’s contest features top-end talent on both sides. Between the Surge and Bandits, five 2025 CEBL award finalists will be taking the floor.

Mitch Creek, in the running for league MVP, will presumably leave his mark in the West Semifinal against a Calgary team he’s found success against individually. The Aussie enters the matchup having averaged 23 points and 12 rebounds on a 52.5 per cent field goal clip in those appearances.

Manning the frontcourt with Creek will be Tyrese Samuel, who’s up for Canadian Player of the Year alongside Calgary’s Sean Miller-Moore. Samuel has turned heads in his first CEBL season as the only player to average a double-double (21.4 points, 10.8 rebounds) this year. Bandits fans will also be hoping for a repeat showing from his last game against the Surge, when the Montreal native put up a team-best 26 points on 12-of-15 shooting.

Meanwhile, Miller-Moore has done his fair share of damage against the Bandits as a Surge mainstay the last three years. The two-time CEBL All-Canadian enters Saturday having averaged 23 points on 52.6 per cent shooting in three games against Vancouver this season, including a game-high 27-point showing in July.

As for Calgary, expect plenty from the two-way tandem of Nelson Jr. and Greg Brown III — both vying for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Nelson Jr. set a new single-season CEBL steals record this season with 57 in 19 games, while his 3.0 steals per game led the league by a full steal over the next closest player.

Brown III was second in the CEBL for both blocks per game (1.8) and total blocks (41) this year. He’s also been highly productive against the Bandits in 2025, averaging 22.3 points and 11.3 rebounds in three appearances.

SURGE, STINGERS RENEW BATTLE OF ALBERTA FOR 2025 WEST PLAY-IN

One of the biggest rivalries in the CEBL gets set to pen its latest chapter on Thursday when the Calgary Surge host the Edmonton Stingers for the Western Conference’s Play-In game.

The Battle of Alberta matchup will tip off at 9:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. local at the WinSport Event Centre, with live broadcast coverage available on TSN, CEBL+, TSN+ and NLSE.

And to raise the stakes even further, Calgary and Edmonton enter the contest as two of the hottest teams in the league. The Surge capped off their regular season with a four-game win streak, while the Stingers weren’t far behind as they won their last three contests.

Unsurprisingly, Calgary’s success came on the back of its impressive defence, entering Thursday allowing the fewest points per game (87.2) of any team this season. All the while, the Surge stepped up even further on that end during their win streak, limiting opponents to just 83.8 points while winning by an average margin of 18.8 points during that span.

What is a bit unexpected, however, is that the Stingers seem to have found their defensive form of late, as well. Despite giving up the second-most points per game (91.0) on the year, Edmonton held opponents to 84.0 points during its three consecutive wins.

It's the kind of effort the Stingers will need to replicate to upset a Surge team that ranked second in scoring (95.3), boasts a 9-3 home record, and holds a 2-0 all-time playoff advantage over the Stingers. For what it's worth, it wouldn’t be the first time Edmonton has overcome those odds — the Stingers are 3-3 all-time in Calgary and 7-3 on the road against the franchise (formerly Guelph).

Season series

If the 2025 campaign was any indication, expect a tightly contested affair on Thursday. The provincial rivals split their first two matchups, as the pair of contests were decided by a combined five points.

Despite that, Edmonton does hold a slight edge entering the Play-In, owning a 2-1 season series lead courtesy of a 23-point win against Calgary in early July.

It is worth noting, however, that the Surge were without Jameer Nelson Jr. — the 10th-ranked scorer (19.4) in the CEBL this year — for that 113-90 loss. Meanwhile, Nelson has enjoyed matching up against Edmonton, averaging 22.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals in his two appearances.

Yet despite the Surge missing Nelson’s dynamism offensively, it was their typically stout defence that ultimately cost them against the Stingers in the final regular-season matchup between the two.

Calgary head coach Caleb Canales made that point abundantly clear after the loss, explaining that the Surge “didn’t play our brand of defence or our brand of basketball.”

Edmonton not only converted at percentages of 50/36/90 from the field, distance and free throw line, but did so while stampeding through Calgary’s interior. The Stingers finished their season-best scoring performance, shooting an impressive 57 per cent from two-point range as they put up 60 points in the paint for a plus-28 edge in that regard.

Meanwhile, the Surge’s lone win against the Stingers this season came back in May, eking out a two-point victory largely thanks to their late-game execution. Calgary entered the fourth quarter down by eight, but outscored Edmonton 28-18 in the final frame to secure a season-opening win.

Players to watch

Nelson will undoubtedly be vital for the Surge’s success on Thursday. The import has been a pillar for Calgary on both ends of the floor, second on the team in scoring, while his 57 steals set a new all-time single-season CEBL record.

Beyond that, the guard’s ability to lift his game in big moments will likely be called upon should the game come down to the wire. In the Surge’s lone win against the Stingers this year, it was Nelson who led the way as he scored the final seven points for his team in Target Score Time.

On the other side, it’s no secret that much of the attention will be on Sean East II, who set the CEBL’s scoring record with 546 points this season. But with much of the defensive attention focused on the import, it should leave room for Scottie Lindsey to operate against a Surge team he’s found success against.

The guard enters Thursday averaging 24.7 points per game against Calgary in 2025, including two of his three best scoring performances. In the Stingers’ latest victory over the Surge, Lindsey scored 29 points, three shy of his season-high, while shooting a torrid 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.

CREEK, EAST II TOP 2025 CEBL AWARD FINALISTS

The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday the individual award nominees for the 2025 CEBL Awards, taking place on Thursday, August 21 at 7 p.m. CDT at The Metropolitan Entertainment Centre (The MET) in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The CEBL Awards serve as the first official event of 2025 Championship Weekend (CW25), which runs from August 21 to 24.

Most Valuable Player finalists Mitch Creek of the Vancouver Bandits and Sean East II of the Edmonton Stingers headline the list of nominees revealed across six player award categories. In total, eight individual CEBL awards will be presented in 2025.

The 2025 CEBL Coach of the Year, Clutch Player of the Year (most Target Score Winners), Fox 40 Officiating Recognition Award winner and All-CEBL First, Second, and All-Canadian teams will also be announced at the CEBL Awards on August 21.

Creek’s leadership and production were instrumental in Vancouver’s league-best 19-5 record this season. He finished second in the CEBL in scoring with 24.4 points per game, ranked third in three-point percentage (48.6%), and fourth in field goal percentage (58.4%). The 6-foot-5 Australian's 488 total points were the second-highest in the league in 2025 and the fourth-most ever recorded in a single CEBL season. He also ranked among the league';s top 10 in several other categories, including free throws made (2nd – 110), field goals made (3rd – 171), minutes played (6th – 687.7), and steals (9th – 30).

East II made history in 2025, setting a new CEBL single-season scoring record with 546 points — surpassing the previous mark of 544 set by Winnipeg’s Teddy Allen in 2023. The first-year Edmonton guard also recorded the second-most steals (48) and seventh-most assists (116) in league history. He led the CEBL in both field goals made (202) and minutes played (741.5), ranked second in steals per game (2.0) and free throw percentage (90.7%), and finished third in scoring with 22.8 points per game. He also made 54 three-pointers, the fourth-highest total in the league this season.

Miller-Moore’s 427 points in 2025 set a new CEBL record for the most scored by a Canadian player in a single season and ranked as the sixth-highest total in league history. The two-time CEBL All-Canadian (2023, 2024) tied for the league lead with six Target Score Winners, and finished second in both minutes played (760.5) and field goals made (173).

In his first CEBL season, Samuel was a dominant presence for the Bandits and the only player in the league to average more than 20 points (21.4) and 10 rebounds (10.8) per game. Despite appearing in just 15 games, the Canadian big man tied for the league lead with six Target Score Winners and led the CEBL in field goal percentage (65.9%). He also ranked third in rebounds per game and tied for third with eight double-doubles.

Smith and Waterman each played valuable roles off the bench for their respective clubs in 2025. Smith appeared in 17 games for the consistently competitive Stingers, averaging 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds in just 15.4 minutes per game. Waterman was a key factor in the BlackJacks’ strong second-half surge, averaging 15.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 23.1 minutes per game, while shooting 52.9 per cent from three-point range.

Surge teammates Greg Brown III and Jameer Nelson Jr. delivered strong two-way performances in 2025, particularly on the defensive end. Brown III ranked second in the CEBL with 1.8 blocks per game and recorded 41 total blocks — third-most in a single season in league history. He also collected the second-most defensive rebounds (144) and finished third in total rebounds (188), while adding 16 steals. Nelson Jr. set a new CEBL single-season record with 57 steals in just 19 games, adding five blocked shots along the way. His 3.0 steals per game average led the league by a full steal over the next closest player, MVP candidate East II.

Rhooms (Toronto Metropolitan University) and Simon (University of Alberta) were nominated for the CEBL’s Developmental Player of the Year award after contributing valuable minutes for their pro teams in 2025. Rhooms appeared in 19 games for the Stingers, logging 150.5 total minutes and averaging 4.5 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. Simon played in all 24 games for the Rattlers, including six starts, and averaged 4.7 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per contest.

Award nominees and winners are determined by votes cast by the league’s head coaches, general managers,

assistant coaches, select league broadcasters, and internal media personnel. Team representatives are

prohibited from voting for a player or head coach from their own team.

All CEBL award winners will receive a customized ring from Jostens, the official Supplier of Awards and Rings of the CEBL; a custom trophy from protocole, crafted from maple and solid metal with a silkscreened CEBL logo; and a special gift from the league’s partner, Foot Locker.

KAL TIRE EXPANDS PARTNERSHIP TO BECOME PRESENTING PARTNER OF CEBL'S WESTERN CONFERENCE

The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday the extension of Kal Tire’s national partnership through the 2027 season, which will see the Official Tire Expert of the CEBL expand its rights to become the presenting partner of the league’s Western Conference and Western Conference Playoffs.

The expansion of Kal Tire’s partnership with the CEBL reinforces one of Canada’s largest independent tire retailer’s support of Canadian basketball and further ingrains its commitment to the CEBL’s five Western Conference teams. As part of this landmark partnership, Kal Tire and its 197 locations in Western Canada will support the upcoming Western Conference Playoffs through an enhanced fan experience and brand campaign.

CALGARY SURGE SIGN VERSATILE GUARD EVAN GILYARD II

JULY 2 - The Calgary Surge are excited to announce the signing of guard Evan Gilyard II.

Gilyard II, a 5’10”, 170-pound guard from Chicago, Illinois, brings speed, playmaking and scoring punch to Calgary’s backcourt. Known for his quickness and high basketball IQ, he can push the pace in transition and create shots for himself and teammates.

After going undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft, Gilyard II turned pro and has built a well-traveled resume. Most recently he played in the NBA G League with the Raptors 905 (Toronto’s affiliate), where in 2024–25 he averaged 12.3 points and 5.1 assists per game. In a March 2025 game for Raptors 905 he erupted for a career-high 34 points in a win over the Windy City Bulls. Gilyard II has also appeared for the Windy City Bulls (the Chicago Bulls’ affiliate) and overseas, signing with CEZ Nymburk of the Czech NBL and the Zonkeys de Tijuana in the Liga Mexicana de Básquetbol CHEVRON CIBACOPA.

Gilyard II enjoyed a standout college career across Conference USA and the Summit League. He played two seasons at UTEP and one at New Mexico State before finishing at the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC) in the NCAA. In 2021–22 at Kansas City, he averaged 16.7 points and 3.3 assists per game, earning Summit League Newcomer of the Year and first-team

all-conference honours.

“Evan brings playmaking, energy and toughness to our backcourt,” said Surge General Manager Shane James. “He’s a true floor general – a quick point guard who can pressure opposing ball handlers, push the tempo, and hit big shots. CALGARY SURGE ADD NBA-EXPERIENCED SWINGMAN JAMORKO PICKETT FOR 2025 SEASON

JUNE 19 - The Calgary Surge have added a dynamic wing guard to their roster, signing Georgetown University standout Jamorko Pickett for the 2025 CEBL season.

Pickett, a 6’9″, 210-pound Washington, DC product, brings a rare two-way skillset—capable of creating his own shot, hitting from deep, and locking down opposing wings.

During his four-year career at Georgetown (2017–2021), he averaged 11.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, earning Big East All-Freshman Team honors in 2018 and capping his senior season at 12.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest.

He also has 13 NBA regular-season appearances with the Detroit Pistons (2021-22), giving him valuable pro experience.

Before his transfer to Georgetown, Pickett starred at San Jacinto College in the NJCAA ranks, where he put up 18.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists as a sophomore and earned All-American honors. A former USA Basketball junior national team member, Pickett has long been lauded for his competitiveness, versatility, and basketball IQ.

CALGARY SURGE ADD MORE SIZE SIGNING ENOCH BOAKYE TO 2025 ROSTER

JUNE 15 - The Calgary Surge have added another physical big man to their roster, signing Canadian center Enoch Boakye for the 2025 CEBL season.

Boakye, a 6’11”, 255-pound Brampton, ON native, brings elite rebounding instincts, shot- blocking ability, and physical toughness to Calgary’s lineup.

He most recently suited up for Villanova University in the 2024-25 season, where he started all 36 games and helped lead the Wildcats to the College Basketball Crown (CBC) semifinals.

Boakye averaged 4.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks per game, while shooting an efficient 65.9% from the field. His season was highlighted by a double-double performance of 11 points and 11 rebounds against UCF in the tournament semifinal game.

Before transferring to Villanova, Boakye played for Fresno State during the 2023-24 campaign, posting 7.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in the Mountain West Conference.

A former top high school prospect, Boakye represented Canada at the international level and was widely recruited for his defensive prowess, strength, and upside as a rim protector.

“Enoch immediately alters the game with his rare combination of length and physicality,” said General Manager Shane James. “He controls the paint on both ends—securing boards, protecting the rim, and powering us through contact. Adding him to our frontcourt gives us another dominant interior presence we’ve been seeking.”

CALGARY SURGE ADD PHYSICAL BIG MAN JAVONTE BROWN TO 2025 ROSTER

JUNE 13 - The Calgary Surge have added another dominant interior presence to their frontcourt, signing Canadian center Javonte Brown for the 2025 CEBL season.

Brown most recently played for the University of Rhode Island during the 2024-25 NCAA season, where he started all 31 games. He averaged 8.1 points and 5.8 rebounds in just over 20 minutes per game, while shooting 65% from the field. He posted a season-high 21 points and ten rebounds against Temple, and recorded multiple blocks in key conference matchups.

Prior to joining the Rams, Brown played at Western Michigan (2022–23), Texas A&M (2021–22), and UConn (2020–21), gaining valuable experience across several top-tier NCAA Division I programs. At Texas A&M, he made 11 starts and helped the team reach the NIT Championship Game. Across his collegiate career, he developed under elite coaching staffs and competed in multiple Power Five and mid-major conferences.

Originally ranked as one of Canada’s top prep prospects, Brown starred at Thornlea Secondary School in Ontario before transferring to national powerhouse Findlay Prep in Nevada. He also represented Canada at the youth national team level and was a member of the U19 team that competed at the FIBA World Cup.

“Javonte brings the kind of size, presence, and interior force that every team needs,” said Surge General Manager Shane James. “He rebounds, defends, finishes inside, and gives us another serious anchor down low. We’re excited to welcome him to Calgary.”

SURGE SNAP BANDITS’ UNDEFEATED START

The Calgary Surge ended the Vancouver Bandits’ undefeated start and jumped to the top of the CEBL standings on Sunday (June 1).

Calgary led for almost the entire game in a comprehensive 95-80 win over Vancouver at Langley Events Centre.

Surge guard Sean Miller-Moore dropped a game-high 22 points, including the game-winning layup, while hitting a major milestone.

“Rugzy” became the sixth player in CEBL history to score 1,000 total points, including the regular season and playoffs.

“It’s just a testament to [the] work I put in… it feels good,” Miller-Moore said.

Miller-Moore was proud of Calgary’s resilience down the stretch when Vancouver cut the deficit to just four points after trailing by 21 in the third.

“They were at the top of the west … so of course, it was a statement win,” he said. “But I'm just proud of how we showed our composure at the end there when they went on a run.”

Greg Brown III also had a massive impact on Sunday despite early foul trouble. The NBA-experienced forward notched a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Jameer Nelson Jr. continued to contribute on both ends for Calgary as well, with 15 points, eight assists, six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.

The Surge defence laid the foundation for its transition offence on Sunday, outscoring the Bandits 24-6 on the fast break.

Calgary head coach Kaleb Canales has emphasized the defence to offence formula throughout the season. After a 5-1 start, Canales said the Surge are a great group to battle with every night.

“The togetherness, the communication on and off the floor, the chemistry – they just love being around each other, and we love coaching them,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Bandits picked up their first loss after a 5-0 start. Head coach Kyle Julius said the Bandits need to take it on the chin after they “flat out got beat”.

“To be honest, we got a lot of wide open shots .. I think we got more wide open shots today than any other game we've played. I think we just didn't make them,” Julius said.

Mitch Creek led the Bandits in scoring once again with 20 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Curtis Hollis also had a big night off the bench for Vancouver, scoring 17 points and sparking a 17-3 run in the fourth quarter.

“The ball just finally hit my hands a couple times. I've been looking for it all game – sometimes it goes like that. We have a really deep team, so once it came to me I just stayed aggressive, and I started making [shots],” Hollis said.

Vancouver started the game with a pair of quick buckets before Calgary seized control with a 10-0 run. The Surge locked in defensively, limiting Vancouver to 23 per cent shooting from the field in the opening 10 minutes and 0-6 from beyond the arc.

The duo of Khyri Thomas and Stefan Jankovic led Calgary on another run to close the quarter, and the Surge carried a 26-13 advantage into the second.

Miller-Moore showed off his offensive versatility in the second quarter, fading from the short corner, forcing a Vancouver timeout with a fastbreak layup, and burying a pair of triples to slow momentum.

Vancouver responded by attacking the paint, sparking a late-half run that featured several highlight-reel finishes—including a massive transition poster dunk by Kyle Mangas. The Bandits closed the gap to 47-40 heading into halftime.

After a pair of mid-range finishes from Izaiah Brockington early in the third cut into the deficit, Calgary took a stranglehold on the lead. The Surge went on an 18-2 run and led by as much as 21 before free throws from Mangas made it 71-52 heading into the fourth.

Hollis jumpstarted the Vancouver offence in the fourth quarter, drilling three trifectas to lead the Bandits on a 17-3 run. The big run made it a four-point game, but Calgary maintained its poise.

Brown III calmed things down with the hoop and the harm, and the teams traded blows until Olumide Adelodun buried a clutch three to give Calgary an 85-77 lead ahead of Target Score Time.

Nelson Jr. drilled a triple of his own to open scoring in the final stretch. Brown III inched Calgary closer with a floater before Miller-Moore ended Vancouver’s undefeated start with back-to-back buckets.

The Surge and Bandits meet again later this month on June 22 at WinSport Event Centre.

SURGE COMPLETE NARROW COMEBACK OVER HONEY BADGERS IN PHYSICAL BATTLE

Despite missing 20 free throws, the Calgary Surge came through at the line when it mattered most.

During Target Score Time, six free throws and three putbacks vaulted the Surge to a comeback win.

Calgary trailed by as many as 15 in the fourth quarter, but fought back in a slower-paced game to earn its third-straight victory.

Surge guard Jameer Nelson Jr. said staying resilient and focusing on each possession led to the turnaround.

“We just kept checking each other in the timeouts and just saying, ‘Nobody else is gonna do it’. The guys we got on the floor – we got nobody else with us – so we just had to make it happen,” Nelson Jr. said.

Physicality was the story of the game, with frequent whistles and opportunities at the line for both teams. Five players – including four Brampton starters – fouled out in the second half.

Brampton was efficient from the free-throw line at 73 per cent while Calgary struggled at 51 per cent, but the Honey Badgers only outscored their opponents by one point at the stripe.

Despite Brampton’s efforts to slow the pace and make it harder on Calgary in the paint, the Surge still won the paint battle 40-28 and the fast break battle 11-0. Second-chance points also made a difference, with a 12-4 advantage for Calgary, including six in Target Score Time.

The trio of Nelson Jr., Sean Miller-Moore and Greg Brown III continued to fuel the Surge attack. Nelson Jr. netted a game-high 24 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, to help lead the comeback.

Miller-Moore scored 19 on an off night from the field, adding seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. Brown III showcased his two-way prowess with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

Meanwhile, the top three scorers for Brampton all had their nights cut short after fouling out. Quinndary Weatherspoon was on pace for an incredible evening with 18 points and eight assists when he picked up his fifth foul in the third quarter.

Amari Kelly and Koby McEwen both fouled out in Target Score Time, with 17 and 14 points respectively.

The loss drops Brampton’s record to 0-5 early in the season. Brampton head coach Sheldon Cassimy said the wins will come if the team continues to play at the same level as Thursday.

“When we play with execution in mind and follow the gameplan and stick together we did today, I’m sure the result will be different,” Cassimy said.

To open the game, both teams struggled from long range and shot a combined one-for-11 from three. Calgary led by as many as seven but Brampton made a run late in the quarter to close the gap to 21-18 after 10 minutes.

The second quarter turned into a foul-heavy defensive battle featuring five lead changes and three ties, before the Honey Badgers protected the paint and sparked an 11–3 run. Brampton maintained a lead for the majority of the frame, but Calgary fought back with a late 6-2 run to head into the locker room tied at 41.

The physicality continued into the third quarter but Brampton emerged with a comfortable lead. The referees were busy and both teams were frequent visitors to the free-throw line. The Honey Badgers went on a 15-4 run to open the half, powered by threes from McEwen and Weatherspoon.

The Surge seized momentum after a scuffle midway through the quarter that led to an unsportsmanlike foul, ending Prince Oduro’s night.

Calgary went on a 7-0 run after the unsportsmanlike, but three consecutive trips to the charity stripe for the Honey Badgers slowed the momentum. Brampton held a 10-point lead heading into the fourth.

McEwen and Muenkat helped the Honey Badgers extend the lead to 15 early in the fourth, but the Surge stayed resilient. A timely 8–2 run before Target Score Time, highlighted by clutch threes from Nelson Jr. and Gabe Osabuohien made it a five-point game. It set the stage for a tense Target Score Time finish.

Osabuohien and Kelly both fouled out early in Target Score Time, including a foul on a Brown III putback. McEwen made an acrobatic finish to get Brampton’s first bucket in the final stretch, before fouling out on the other end.

The next eight combined points all came at the free throw line, before a Miller-Moore putback and a corner three from Brown III put Calgary one point away from victory. After a contested attempt at the rim from Miller-Moore, Osayi Osifo snagged the rebound and sealed the comeback with a putback layup.

Dear Calgary,

Two and a half years ago, we stood before Calgary with a bold vision: to launch a professional basketball team that would do things differently – a team rooted in community, driven by creativity, and fearless in our ambition.

This past Sunday, in front of a raucous crowd at WinSport Event Centre, we began our third season in the Canadian Elite Basketball League – Canada’s largest professional sports league. I’m honoured to be writing this letter on behalf of the hundreds of talented staff, athletes, and corporate partners that make up the Calgary Surge .

Since that first press conference in October 2022, this journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Two straight Championship Weekend appearances. A record-breaking night at the Scotiabank Saddledome . Thousands of Surge ASSIST kids and families supported due to the generous support of donors and some unforgettable performances from our city’s talented and diverse artists. None of it was guaranteed – and none of it was easy. But thanks to the commitment of our people and the passion of our fans, we’ve built something truly authentic and bold.

At the heart of our identity is a clear mission: to reflect, entertain, and unite communities through the power of basketball and the arts . And no matter what corner of the world I’ve traveled to over the last several months, whenever I share that mission with others, it typically follows with comments about how special that focus is.

This season, our TRILOGY season, that vision grows even bigger. Our connection to the NBA has never been stronger. The Surge have now welcomed Head Coach Kaleb Canales , the first former NBA-experienced Head Coach to coach in the CEBL. The Surge have also now proudly signed the three highest NBA draft picks ever to play in the CEBL ( Greg Brown III , Khyri Thomas , and 2023 & 2024 player Justin Jackson ) – proof that the world’s best basketball talent believes in not only our organization but our beautiful city as well.

And it’s not just the product on the court that’s elevating.

This summer, we will launch SURGE CITY , a partnership with the City of Calgary to deliver free youth basketball clinics and a signature 3-on-3 tournament right in the heart of downtown.

Over two seasons we have SURGED 2 THE DOME , over 12,000 strong, and we will again on August 10th for our season finale. In a few weeks’ time, we will SURGE 2 RED DEER for a Battle of Alberta, the first ever neutral site game held in the CEBL’s 7 seasons, and on July 9th we will SURGE to STAMPEDE as a headline act on our biggest stage to date.

But above all that, we are most proud of the work that we do in community. There are fewer bright lights, there is less fanfare, but the impact we’ve been able to create in youth simply picking up a basketball for the first time, playing with others in an environment where there they are respected and cared for and emboldened to do great things has been our greatest achievement over the last two and half years.

Calgary, AB – This summer, The City of Calgary and the Calgary Surge are teaming up to bring FREE youth basketball clinics and a high-energy 3-on-3 tournament to the heart of our city. Whether you’re a future star or just looking for summer fun, everyone’s invited to get in the game!

This community program kicks off the end of June, offering youth ages nine-12 and 13-17 the chance to sharpen their basketball skills with professional-level coaching at the Century Gardens Basketball Courts (826 8 Avenue SW). The 3-on-3 basketball tournament is happening later this summer with details coming soon. Since opening in 2023, the colourful courts have attracted positive activity in Downtown West and provides a recreation opportunity for nearby residents and office workers. In true Calgary fashion, the basketball courts are active rain, shine and even snow.

“This is the kind of partnership that brings our vision for downtown Calgary to life,” says Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “By working with the Calgary Surge and investing in free, accessible programming like these youth basketball clinics, we are building community, creating safer public spaces, and making downtown a place where people want to be."

DEFENDING CHAMPION RIVER LIONS USE TASTE OF TITLE RUN TO TOP SURGE IN SEASON OPENER

The Battle of Alberta picked up right where it left off on Sunday.

In the opening game of the 2025 CEBL season, the Calgary Surge beat the Edmonton Stingers 86-84 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre.

For the Stingers, their season starts in the same bitter way that the last two seasons ended after they fell to the Surge in the Western Conference semifinals each time.

Meanwhile, the Surge — boasting a largely new lineup, including Jameer Nelson Jr., who scored the game winner — still seem to have the upper hand on their provincial rival.

“I thought the crowd was great. I thought that was a lot of adversity for us. And it’s a rivalry, so I feel like we’re gonna be tested, but that was definitely a tough test to start the season,” Nelson Jr. said after the game.

The Stingers took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the Surge responded with an 11-1 run to tie things up.

Edmonton and Calgary remained knotted at 77 apiece when the clock was stopped for Target Score Time.

The Stingers again raced to an advantage, scoring the next five points. But the Surge battled back once more with a 7-0 run before the Stingers tied the game at 84, setting the stage for next-bucket-wins territory.

That’s when Nelson Jr. put a speedy end to things, racing coast-to-coast for a layup to seal the win in his first-ever CEBL game.

“I didn’t know I was gonna get that open. I got full speed, so there was no reason to stop,” Nelson Jr., who was named game MVP, told sideline reporter Sarah Ryan. Nelson Jr. led the Surge with 22 points on seven-for-12 shooting, adding five rebounds and four assists.

The 23-year-old, who is the son of longtime Orlando Magic guard Jameer Nelson, completed his NCAA career with Texas Christian University in 2024 before playing 30 games with the G League’s Austin Spurs, where he scored 11.4 points per contest.

He had three simple words on his first taste of the Battle of Alberta.

“I love it,” he told Ryan.

On the other side, Stingers coach Jordan Baker said his team fell just short in a hard-fought contest.

“Up and down. Game of runs, we just ended up on the wrong end of one at the end,” he said. Meanwhile, Calgary Surge head coach Kaleb Canales got an early lesson in what makes the CEBL so unique in his first game.

Canales entered his first season as the only bench boss in league history with NBA experience after leading the Portland Trail Blazers for 23 games in 2012. He credited his team’s toughness for the comeback.

“Season openers, there’s gonna be jitters, there’s gonna be mistakes. But basketball’s an imperfect game. It just shows the level of toughness we’ve shown throughout camp,” Canales said.

Greg Brown III impressed in his first CEBL action with 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks, while Sean Miller-Moore and Gabe Osabuohien also contributed 14 points each for Calgary.

For Edmonton, Sean East II led the way with a game-high 22 points, plus eight rebounds and eight assists.

East II, 24, graduated from the University of Missouri in 2024 and went on to spend his first professional season split between the G League’s South Bay Lakers and Romania’s BC Athletic Constanta.

The springy guard managed to get into just four total games, all in Europe. Still, he showed no rust in averaging 25.5 points per contest.

That offensive flare continued with Edmonton.

“He’s dynamic with the ball in his hands, he’s capable from inside and out, he creates for others. I gave him a challenge before the game to rebound the basketball and he had eight of them,” Baker said.

East II said he enjoyed his first taste of CEBL basketball.

“It was good energy. It’s a different type of game. It’s entertainment, but it’s a serious game, so you gotta stay locked in on getting the win,” East II said.

Stingers guard Aaron Rhooms, a Toronto native who just completed his junior season with Toronto Metropolitan University, added nine points and five rebounds in the loss.

Forward Keon Ambrose-Hylton posted a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double.

A fast-paced first quarter ended with the teams tied at 23, but the Surge took a 45-44 advantage into halftime after ending the second quarter on a 9-0 run.

Edmonton responded with a big third quarter to take a 66-58 lead into the final 10 minutes. The game marked No. 1 of what is set to be the biggest CEBL season ever as the schedule expands to 24 games per team.

Calgary and Edmonton will meet twice more, including on June 19 during the first CEBL game ever in Red Deer, Alta.
