THE CALGARY SURGE SIGN GUY EDI, A 6’6” FORWARD FROM AGBOVILLE, IVORY COAST.

Jun 14, 2023

CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Surge have signed six-foot-six guard Guy Edi for their 2023 inaugural season, the team announced Wednesday.

Edi most recently played professionally in Europe where he averaged 9.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 21.8 minutes in 228 games played.

“Guy is a veteran that has played all over the world professionally including on the Ivory Coast National team. With his experience, we expect him to add a different type of leadership to our group and have a voice in our locker room,” said Surge General Manager, Shane James. “His ability to defend multiple positions fits within our system and culture. He can shoot the ball at a high clip and that is important for us in spreading the floor and creating more space for other players to operate. We are very excited to have Guy with us.”

The Ivory Coast native spent the 2022-23 season at the Basketball Loewen Erfurt in the German Pro B League where he averaged 20.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.6 steals and 31.8 minutes in 27 games played. He started in all 27 games during his time in Germany and led the team in points rebounds and minutes. That season, he had nine double-doubles and scored a season-high of 37 points.

“I have heard a lot of great things about the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), and I am excited to get started, meet my new teammates, and help them keep the momentum they have gained early in the season. Let’s get to work!” said Edi.

Edi comes to the Surge with 10 years of professional basketball experience. He has also represented both France and the Ivory Coast on the international stage.

About the Calgary Surge

The Calgary franchise originated as the Guelph Nighthawks in 2018, one of the six founding members of the CEBL. The organization was relocated from the league’s smallest market to Calgary in August 2022 as part of the growing league's business strategy to have teams in Canada’s largest metropolitan areas. Chairman Usman Tahir Jutt and Vice-Chairman and President Jason Ribeiro saw an opportunity to bridge Calgary’s diverse communities together through sport and entertainment and to create a sense of belonging.
